Substitutes
Subbing With The California Montessori Project
Welcome, we’re so happy you’re considering subbing with us! As a substitute, you’ll be stepping into a vibrant Montessori community where curiosity, creativity, and independence are celebrated every day. Our classrooms are uniquely designed with mixed-age groups, allowing students to learn from and inspire each other. Each classroom is supported by at least two adults, a lead teacher and an instructional assistant, working together to create a nurturing and dynamic environment. Plus, we offer before and after-school programs to support families and enrich students’ experiences beyond the regular school day.
Read below for details about how to join our team, what kinds of roles we need, and how you can make a meaningful impact on our students’ journeys!

Substitute Guides and FAQ's
-
The short answer: submit your application through Paycor. All candidates use the same application, whether you are interested in substituting as a lead teacher or applying for a classified role.
We continually expand our substitute pool and accept substitute applications year-round.
-
CMP relies on substitutes across many areas — from lead teachers and instructional assistants (including before- and after-school support) to administrative assistants, maintenance, custodial staff, and more.
At CMP, we refer to our lead teacher substitutes as “certificated” and all other substitute roles as “classified.”
-
To substitute at CMP, you generally need either a California teaching credential (such as a Multiple Subject credential) or an Emergency 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit.
The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) provides detailed information on how to obtain a 30-Day Permit, but here’s a quick overview of the process:
-
Hold a bachelor’s degree or higher
-
Complete a LiveScan background check for the CTC (separate from CMP’s LiveScan)
-
Submit an application to the CTC
-
Pay the application fee ($100)
Please note, the 30-Day Substitute Permit is valid for one year and can be renewed.

When an employee posts an absence, you will be notified via the app and text message if it fits your criteria, and you can accept the position right then and there!

Can I say "no" when I’m called?
Absolutely! Being a substitute means flexible scheduling that fits your life. Whether you want to work just one day a month or every day except Tuesdays, it’s up to you. You decide your availability, and then accept jobs that fit your schedule. We do ask that you have enough availability to cover at least two assignments per week to help support our schools consistently. Can I choose which campus(es) to sub at?
Definitely! CMP has six campuses across seven locations, and you get to choose where you want to work. The more campuses you select, the more job opportunities you'll receive. Our campuses include:-
