Students Experiencing Homelessness
California Montessori Project is committed to ensuring that every student has consistent access to school and the support they need to succeed. Students and families experiencing temporary or unstable housing may be eligible for additional rights and services under the federal McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act.

Who May Qualify?
A student may qualify for support if they do not have a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence. This may include children and youth who are:

* Sharing housing with another family or other people due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar reason;
* Living in a motel, hotel, shelter, transitional housing, campground, car, or other temporary setting;
* Living somewhere that is not ordinarily used as a regular sleeping accommodation; or
* Living without a parent or guardian while experiencing an unstable housing situation.

Housing situations can change unexpectedly. Families are encouraged to contact us even if they are unsure whether their situation qualifies.

Educational Rights
Students experiencing homelessness have important educational rights and protections, which may include:

* Immediate enrollment in school, even when documents normally required for enrollment are not immediately available;
* The right to remain in their school of origin when it is in the student's best interest;
* Transportation assistance to and from the school of origin when required;
* Full and equal access to educational programs, services, and school activities for which the student is eligible;
* Assistance removing barriers to enrollment, attendance, and participation in school; and
* Support resolving disputes regarding eligibility, school selection, or enrollment.
